My father inherited from his dad the sirname Slebodnik. I carried this name for many years till I got to California where many folks began to stumble over its spelling and pronunciation. Since dad always talked about a simpler name, I decided to simplify it and relate it to my work at the same time. Since Grampa Faix liked to fix things, that seemed to be a logical choice. To Make that more appropriate The Faix name is a French name meaning; "to do work"or,"to fix things". Although Grampa was German, The fathers all past on the French name Faix..Mother said," all the Faix fathers were Blacksmiths in Europe allowing them to travel anywhere including America, the land of opportunity. Grampa Jim Faix was a steel worker. Something about blacksmithing in his blood. My Brothers and my son still proudly carry the name Slebodnik. But all my customers still can easily remember my name after many years as Jim Fix. I don't mind being called by either name since I'm proud of both. (Thanks MOM)! Grampa slebodnik was a Farmer and steel worker. Dad John Slebodnik was a coal miner and farmer.
